Getting your files ready for print

For Fine Art Giclée and Large Format projects, we recommend simply using standard image file formats such as Tiff, PSD, JPG, etc. For more complex printing projects containing many elements, such as fonts and linked graphics, we recommend Press Ready PDF files (see below). For best results we recommend your image resolution be in the neighborhood of 300 dpi/ppi and not below 180 dpi/ppi.

So how do I make a PDF?
The Principle is Document file->Postscript file->PDF file.
1. Install Adobe Acrobat (If you do not have access to Acrobat, see Freeware list below).
2. Open your printing document in any desktop publishing application of your choice and
select Print from the File Menu.
3. Select Acrobat Distiller from the list of printers. Click on the button "Properties", and choose the Adobe PDF settings tab.
4. In Select conversion settings choose "Print", and click on the button "Edit conversion settings". Under the tab "Fonts", make sure that the boxes "Embed all fonts" and "Subset embedded fonts" are checked. This ensures that your pdf document may be properly viewed and printed on other systems
5. If you changed any Distiller settings, save the new settings under a suitable name and use these settings or import the downloaded file "The Color Group.joboptions" from above and make this your default Acrobat Distiller setting for creating PDFs.
6. Click OK to return to the Print menu
7. Click OK to print the document. Name the file as needed. Alternatively you can select "print to file" within the printer dialog box and select a file name.

Once you have created a Postscript file, simply drag and drop the file on to Distiller or upload the Postscript file to us and we'll create a PDF for you!

* Many programs now allow you to simply "Export To PDF". Just make sure the export settings are set up to create a "Press Ready" PDF. Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions regarding this process.
